The Lonely Astronaut

This project deals with viewing my journey with mental health issues through the lens of following this fictional astronaut through their harrowing journey. The astronaut is used so that any viewer can envision themself in the role and relate to the struggles they experience. The final piece uses the Galactic alphabet to say phrases to the astronaut character to encourage them to keep going.

Paintings are either acrylic on canvas or gouache on watercolor paper.

The ship crashes in the ocean of a moon orbiting a red planet, the sky changes colors during the day, the astronaut escapes and begins to wander.
The astronaut finds fresh water pools as the sun rises, and refills their canteen before pushing forward in hopes of finding a way off the moon.
As the twin suns rise in the sky the astronaut spots a ruin covered in vines and inside finds a map to the abandoned civilization of this planet. It is a long journey through difficult terrain but the astronaut remains optimistic.
The astronaut takes a break in a field of purple grass . It is noon and even through the temperature controlling climate of the suit blocks out the worst of it, the suns are hot. But the grass is cool and the astronaut dreams of home.
The astronaut finds themself in an abandoned city with indecipherable phrases. The astronaut doesn't know, but the words are ones of encouragement: SOMETHING IS OUT THERE YOU HAVE SO MUCH AHEAD OF YOU YOU WILL BE OKAY THIS WILL COME TO PASS REST NOW
